TURKEY

Turkey just may be the ultimate holiday destination. In one thrilling, sun-kissed package tourists can discover perfect beaches, ancient ruins, epic religious sites, wonderful food, glorious scenery, and a warm welcome from the famously friendly local people. Turkey includes tremendous variety in its vast borders: the west and east coast beach resorts offer pristine beaches and gorgeous turquoise-coloured waters, while to the west of the land are the rugged mountains of the Anatolian plateau, with its ancient cities and vibrant tribal cultures. Turkey’s variety is best experienced in the glorious city of Istanbul, straddling two continents across the Bosphorous, and with Ottoman mosques and palaces, Roman ruins and glorious Byzantine churches interspersed with cutting edge nightlife, retail stores and modern developments.

It’s easy to get seduced by the picture perfect resorts of Oludeniz, Bodrum and Marmaris, but Turkey has plenty of other world-class attractions. Top draws include Cappadocia’s famed rock-hewn houses and churches, set amid a lunar-esque landscape; Gallipoli, a emotionally moving WWI site; the astounding ancient cities of Ephesus and Pergammon; and the thermal waters of Pamukkale. Turkey offers a curious and exciting mix of ancient and modern; east and west; secular and pious, and visitors seldom find one trip enough.

16 APR 2019 DAY 2 TUESDAY GROUP TOUR ISTANBUL (L)

Tour Bosphorus Cruise, Abu Ayub Al Ansari Mosque, Cable Car Ride to Pierre Loti Hill
Date 22 March Start AM

Istanbul: The capital successively of Byzantine and Ottoman Empires and now modern Turkey’s booming metropolis, it is one of the most beautiful and fascinating cities in the world. Board your cruise boat at the Eminonu Pier for a breathtaking cruise along the mighty Bosphorus Strait that separates Europe and Asia and runs through the city of Istanbul.

Vividly coloured spices are displayed alongside jewel-like Turkish delights at this Ottoman-era marketplace, providing eye candy for the thousands of tourists and locals who make their way here every day. Stalls also sell caviar, dried herbs, honey, nuts and dried fruits. In its heyday, the bazaar was the last stop for the camel caravans that travelled the Silk Road from China, India and Persia. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.

The tour continues with a visit to the Mosque of Abu Ayyub Al Ansari, one of the most holy and important mosques in all of Turkey. It is so revered because it is located on the site of the mausoleum of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari who hosted Prophet Muhammed (s.a.w) on his entry into Madinah at the end of his Hijra from Makkah. He was also a companion and standard bearer for the Prophet (s.a.w) and was killed during the first Arab siege of Constantinople between 674 and 678 led by the Caliph Muawiya.

Also located in the Eyup District of Fatih on the European side of the Bosphrous is the Pierre Loti Hill. Take the cable car to its peaks where you can sip delicious, authentic tea at its famous tea houses. Pierre Loti also boasts breathtaking views of the city, including a picture-perfect view of the Golden Horn from Eyup to Eminonu. Evening at leisure. Overnight at your hotel.

Transfer Check out from your hotel after breakfast and drive from Istanbul to Bursa by Minibus.
Pick Up 17 April AM Crowne Plaza Old City Istanbul
Drop Off 17 April PM Hotel Tugcu Bursa

Bursa was the first capital of the Ottoman Empire. The two founding Sultans, Osman and Orhan Ghazi are buried here and this is where the Empire’s great architectural style was first developed. The city clings to the slopes of Uludağ, the Bithynian Mount Olympus, and thus got its nickname Green Bursa from the surrounding forests. After arrival in Bursa, stop for lunch at a local restaurant and visit the Grand Mosque, the Green Mosque and Tomb and the Silk Market.

Situated at the western end of Atatürk Caddesi, the main boulevard in Bursa’s city centre, the Ulu Cami or Grand Mosque is a huge stone structure topped by 20 domes. Ulu Cami is one of the masterpieces of Ottoman architecture, as well as being the biggest and most impressive structure in Bursa. The Great Mosque was built by the genius architect Ali Neccar, at the request of Ottoman Sultan Bayezid between 1396 & 1400.

The Green Mosque, was commissioned by Sultan Mehmet I Çelebi and finished in 1424. It is set on a promontory overlooking the valley that is now urban sprawl and takes its name from the green-blue tiles of its interior. Although Bursa’s Great Mosque is the city’s largest, the Green Mosque is its architectural gem, exemplifying the movement from the original Seljuk Turkish hypostyle of the Great Mosque Ulu Cami to the later great domed mosques of Edirne and Istanbul.

Koza Han literally means “Cocoon Bazaar” but it is generally translated as ‘’silk bazaar’’. Sultan Bayezid II built it as a charity in 1491 in order to finance the expenditures of Yildirim Complex in Istanbul. Formerly, Koza Han was the place that cocoons of silkworms were bought and sold. Thus, it played a key role that made Bursa the centre for textile trade. Bursa is known for its fine silks, especially silk scarves, some of which are still made here.

Credited with the invention of parchment, this once great seat of learning and culture had a library with over 200,000 volumes and a Medical Centre; the remains of which can still be seen today. Stop for lunch before driving on to Izmir.

Formerly Smyrna and once famous for its figs, Izmir is now Turkey’s 3rd-largest city, the “capital” of the Aegean region, a major port and commercial centre set dramatically around a huge bay and backed by mountains to the south. Photo stop at Izmir Bay and the Clock Tower before spending some free time to browse.

The Izmir Clock Tower was constructed by Grand Vizier Said Pasha on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Sultan Abdul Hamid II’s ascending the throne in 1901. Located at Konak Square in the city centre the Clock Tower is a symbol of Izmir. Designed by a Levantine French architect, it has lace-like stone masonry, stands 25 metres high with 4 clocks and elegant fountains on each corner

Its seafront promenade, marina, and harbour are lined with hotels and restaurants. Just offshore on Pigeon Island is a walled Byzantine castle that once guarded the town, connected to the mainland via causeway.

Ancient Ephesus was a Greek city of Asia Minor, near the mouth of the Menderes River, in what is today West Turkey, South of Smyrna, now Izmir. One of the greatest of the Ionian cities, it became the leading seaport of the region whose wealth was legendary. Located near an old centre of worship of a native nature goddess, who was equated with the Greek goddess, Artemis. Ephesus today is an important tourism centre in Turkey.

Pamukkale is a surreal natural wonder that is a must see attraction on your travels in Turkey. Rippling out in a series of semi-circular travertines, this pure-white mountain, set among the green farming fields, makes for some bizarrely beautiful photographic opportunities. In the middle of the flat plain between Konya and Aksaray, at a lonely point on the ancient Silk Road, Seljuk Turkish Sultan Alaeddin Keykubat I built a caravanserai, or caravan way-station between 1229 and 1236. It was named, appropriately, the Sultan Han–han meaning caravanserai.
